Black Women in Japan Convention
The Black Women in Japan Convention is our main event and provides the stage for BWIJ members to meet and connect on a personal level. This event fosters career enhancement and personal development related to life in Japan. BWIJ aims to create a space for fellowship, networking, and business support while celebrating the diverse sisterhood of the African diaspora and Japanese culture.

Mentorship
Big/Lil Sister is our mentorship programme. It connects Black women who are currently living in Japan. Its main aim is to create a comfortable transition for ladies (lil sisters) newly in Japan, while giving the more experienced ladies (big sisters) a chance to give back to the community. This programme assists ‘new’ members in navigating Japan while introducing them to varied aspects of Japanese culture.
Big sisters
- Ladies who have been living in Japan for a few years and are willing to share their experiences
- Provide a listening ear and offer advice and guidance
- Willing to take the initiative to organize casual one-on-one get-togethers and contact their mentees for updates on their progress.
Little sisters
- Ladies who have recently moved to Japan and need advice on life in Japan, career, etc.
- The frequency and level of involvement is freely decided by the pair.
Regional programs
Our members host activities, meetups, and community service events across Japan. We celebrate the richness and diversity of the African diaspora, honoring the many different backgrounds and cultures our members bring. At the same time, we embrace our lives in Japan by fostering genuine connections and open dialogue with local Japanese communities.
